Connecting the past and the future of Japanese home

The Western culture began influencing Japanese society during the Meiji Era, 1868 to 1877. Since then, the coexistence of traditional culture and modern society has had a tremendous effect on how Japanese people live. This article explores five major topics:

1. How Japanese people lived before Western influence.

2. How the Japanese idea of “The Home” has transformed post Western influence.

3. How modern Japanese homes operate in contemporary society.

4. Has the contemporary Japanese home lost too much of the traditional quality of its predecessors?

5. Would the idea of the traditional Japanese home fit into our contemporary world? These five questions will lead to an understanding of the balance in traditional and contemporary Japanese homes, and help to map their coexist in the future.

Starting in the Meiji Era (1868- 1877) it became evident that western culture was becoming more and more prominent in Japanese society.
